Curriculum is a key topic in the homeschool community, and in some circles a big debate. If you are new to homeschooling (comment to this post if you are!), you may not be aware that curriculum was non-existent when homeschooling got its start. Our homeschooling pioneers in the US had to clear their own path in a new territory. There were no resources, no groups and no curriculum. So, naturally they had to create their own educational tools from libraries, bookstores and the few school districts who were willing to share their resources with parents.
Fast forward to today and you will find hundreds of curricula to choose from. It is only natural that the homeschooling pioneers constructed a culture of do-it-yourselfers who wanted to create their own education plans. Today however, many people do not want to be the creator and appreciate ready made curriculum, making their decision to homeschool easier. For instance, if you are coming from a conventional school setting you may want a traditional curriculum because that is what you are used to. Of course a large number of us are somewhere in between, with the mentality that yes, curriculum is good, but it is not the beginning or end to our child’s education. Always keep in mind that you have a choice and you are in charge! Be creative by using more than books and explore your options. Homeschooling is a culture and it is open to all. There is plenty of room for new ideas and new ways of thinking. If it works for you and your family, then it is good!

Since I am new to the idea of homeschooling I thought I would follow the instructions and respond. I think having a general curriculum to follow help those of us who do not have time to pioneer. I certainly admire Davey Crockett, but would not want to live his life. Thus, some structure is welcome. On the other hand, I am very tired of someone else deciding what is “required” and making no sense as to what. That process itself seems to kill my child’s individuality. I still struggle with whether my child can actually succeed in this environment?
i am new at this my son is 14 and we have decided to home school i am tyrin to figure this out so if someone has any suggestion i really would appreciate it thanks
Excellent! I have homeschooled one child; and it was 13 years ago. It WAS hard, running around trying to find books and workbooks. This is a great alternative, as stated. It is the best price I found and appears to have an excellent curriculum. It also seems to have a wide variety to choose from for ones own individulity. I will be attending a new student orientation in a week and can’t wait to get started. Thank you Progress Academy.
I am a 15 year old student in 10th grade. I’m transferring to Progress Academy because I’m sick of the normal school environment and not being able to take classes I want. I know there are required courses, right? But then ones I get to pick are really exciting to me. I really want to complete two grade levels this year. How hard will I have to work to do that? Thanks!
