Silly Bandz Homeschooling

I was in Florida vacationing with my family back in May. We had gone to the grocery store and saw these rubber band like bracelets at the checkout in fun animal shapes. It was an inexpensive treat so we bought some for the kids. Our girls started wearing these brightly colored rubber band bracelets called Silly Bandz. We were standing in line somewhere and the woman in front of us asked the girls about the bracelets – we explained that we had just found them at the grocery store. The woman said she was a school teacher and asked my girls if all the kids at school were wearing these bracelets. My girls said “We are homeschooled, we don’t know if the kids at school are wearing them.” I thought to myself – I’ll bet they won’t allow these fun bracelets at school because they would be a big distraction. And I said to myself – I bet they will ban these bracelets as soon as they can! I was suddenly very glad to live a more carefree life – homeschooling my children, free of the impositions and unnecessary restrictions. We still buy some Silly Bandz once in awhile for fun – my kids aren’t obsessed just enjoying the fun bracelets. We even use the packs to do a little math – dividing up the packs and adding to the collection! It is interesting how the relaxed atmosphere of homeschooling finds learning even in the silliest of things!

I agree. My husband put .50 in a ‘claw’ machine at the movie theater because he saw these very large clear eggs with what he thought were the florescent rubber bracelets that were so popular in the 80′s. He was thinking he could win some for our girls. He captured two eggs for a total $1.00 spent. When we got home; he sat down with them and opened the eggs. There were three packages of bracelets vacuumed into each egg for more than 70 bracelets combined! They had different themes per package;Dinosaurs, musical instruments, etc. My girls used them for math games, picture making games and silly stories plus jewelry. At the store, we were also stopped and told they were band at school and an annoyance. She told us to throw them away. The woman said the stores that agree to be penalized for adding to the problem. I was shocked and walked off with my girls. Such anger over neon ‘shape’ bracelets. Another customer came up to us as soon as we were far enough away to explain that this woman was a local elementary school teacher with no husband or children. She was very strict in her classroom and in her life. I suddenly felt very bad for her. For all her academic success; she was lacking the ability to see the simple beauty life has to offer. How will this affect the numerous students she teachers year after year? Yes, I’m soooo glad to be a very successful home schooled family. And as far as the neon bracelets …….hmmm…… they go back to their clear eggs in the cabinet when not in use. No sign of a distraction or rebellious revolution yet. But you never know!? It could be Toy Story 4 !!!!!

Hi I am a first time home schooling mom to a teenager no doubt. Anyway I was reading your article on the silly bracelets and just wanted to give a little word to the wise so to speak. My daughter in grade school and middle school wanted some of them colorful plastic bracelets that can out a few years back and are still around. I had heard on the local news out of Orlando what the teenagers were wearing them for. They were used as sex game pieces. Different colors stood for different act that the young ones would do, mainly the girls, So I asked my girl about these colored bands and what they stood for. She did tell me that they were used for that by a lot of kids, even tho she said she just like to wear them she throw them away because she didn’t want to stumble anyone.
please do not think that is is what i am saying about your girls bracelets because I do not know no such thing. I was just giving a little info on something like them. Us parents and teacher need to help each other out AMAP.
    Thank you. Patty Craig
