What are your plans after High School graduation? Progress Academy has a large population of High School students, the largest student body is found in our 9th grade. Our Class of 2016 will be a big graduating class! We have found 5 colleges in the US that are tuition free! Start planning now for an economical post high school experience. First, decide what your passion is – have a reason to go to college. High School information at http://www.progressacademy.org/curriculum/high-school/

“It’s all too easy to be a victim of student debt. According to the College Board, the average price of tuition, fees, room and board for an in-state student at a public college or university is $17,860 for the 2012-13 school year.

For out-of-state students, average costs jump to $30,911 while private nonprofit colleges charged $39,518 on average for a single year of education. With sticker prices skyrocketing, it’s no shock that student debt levels and loan default rates are up.”

“The National Center for Education Statistics says that 1.7 percent of kids were homeschooled in 1999, 2.2 percent in 2003, and 2.9 percent in 2007. Today, that figure is at 4 percent, according to an article published at EducationNews.org. So it appears that the homeschooling growth rate is more exponential than it is steady.”

Quoted from CNN “Schools of Thought” http://schoolsofthought.blogs.cnn.com/2012/08/28/doing-the-math-behind-homeschooling/

Our family was in a transitional time about 12 years ago. Job changes, possible move to another state, and two children in elementary school. We decided it would be best for our family if we homeschooled – because we didn’t know when we would move, and we thought if we homeschooled at least the kids educational experience would remain the same for them. So, we embarked on this journey for logistics and family continuity. We made a lovely little school room in our house fully equipped with a flag to say the Pledge of Allegiance and everything. The first couple of days were wonderful; very mainstream, with cute posters, bagged lunches and smiley stickers for worksheets well done. One morning in our new school room at home, we had just started on our work when a friend called – surprisingly I answered the phone saying I was doing school now, my friend said “turn on the tv” it was September 11, 2001… We didn’t get back to our workbooks for days. Ironically, we started homeschooling for completely different reasons, but were now extremely grateful to have our children safe at home with us on this tragic day in American history.

Whatever your reasons are, you are not alone. New people are making the choice to homeschool everyday, whether it is safety, logistics, education, religion, bullying, etc. The choice to home educate is growing by leaps and bounds. And the educational options are also becoming very plentiful. It is a very big step, but nowadays you have a large variety of resources, curriculums and support. Welcome to the Homeschool Community!

For the price of a cup of coffee, approximately $2.73 per day, you can educate your child from the comfort of your own home with an excellent traditional curriculum written to meet the CORE National Standards for learning. Is this homeschooling? Yes. Do you have to create everything, write the curriculum, come up with worksheets, figure out what to teach for Math, and make sure your child is learning at the level you want them to, No! We have taken the work out of it for you and created an online curriculum program ready to use here at Progress Academy.

Online learning is growing by about 12% per year, most colleges and universities are offering online courses. Many high schools in America are requiring online courses to keep their students competitive and prepared for higher education. The Study “Going the Distance: Online Education in the United States, 2011” reports that more than 6.1 million students took at least one online class during Fall 2010 – a 10.1 percent increase over the year before.

According to legend, the ancient Olympic Games were founded by Heracles (the
Roman Hercules), a son of Zeus. Yet the first Olympic Games for which we still
have written records were held in 776 BCE (though it is generally believed that the
Games had been going on for many years already). At this Olympic Games, a naked
runner, Coroebus (a cook from Elis), won the sole event at the Olympics, the stade -
a run of approximately 192 meters (210 yards). This made Coroebus the very first
Olympic champion in history.

The games still continue almost 2,000 years later! It seems that competition is in our
blood. We like to come together as a community and see who is the best at running,
jumping, etc. It is a strong tradition for the human race to train, practice, and try to
do our best. Accomplishment is a strong desire and one that fuels us to achieve our
goals.

We watch the Olympics every time and really get excited to watch the competitions.
It is inspiring to see people work hard and achieve success. We all strive to do our
best and the Olympics are a great way to see that played out.

educational tools and ways that you can be more active at home!

There are so many reasons – is it the norm to put your child in school, absolutely – it is what people have been conditioned to do since public education began almost 100 years ago. Is it what we have been doing for centuries here in America – No! When did public education start and why?

Stephanie Watson, writer for HowStuffWorks

“Hundreds of years ago, most learning happened at home. Parents taught their children or, if their families could afford it, private tutors did the job. …by 1918, all American children were required to attend at least elementary school.” http://people.howstuffworks.com/public-schools1.htm

“Here’s a funny thing about education — it comes in all shapes and sizes. When you get curious about something and come to a place like How Stuff Works to learn about it, you are participating in a form of homeschooling. This is sometimes called interest-motivated education or self-motivated education. You get interested in something for whatever reason, that interest motivates you to learn about it, and you do learn about it by doing your own research.” http://people.howstuffworks.com/question382.htm

Main article: Education in Colonial America from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_education_in_the_United_States

“The first American schools in the thirteen original colonies opened in the 17th century. Boston Latin School was founded in 1635 and is both the first public school and oldest existing school in the United States.[1] Cremin (1970) stresses that colonists tried at first to educate by the traditional English methods of family, church, community, and apprenticeship, with schools later becoming the key agent in “socialization.” At first, the rudiments of literacy and arithmetic were taught inside the family, assuming the parents had those skills.”

^ “History of Boston Latin School—oldest public school in America”. BLS Web Site. Archived from the original on 2007-05-02. Retrieved 2007-06-01.

As you will note, education at home was the norm, and even the preferred method for certain subjects. So, it is in our history as a nation to educate at home. It is also a liberty we enjoy in America to educate ourselves and our children on what we feel is interesting and important. I would bet that most of you reading this have used www.Google.com this week, or maybe even today. That is education.

Today we have so many resources on education that homeschooling is not mysterious anymore. Google homeschooling and see what you get!! The important thing to remember is that you have choices in education – so exercise your freedom!

In a traditional brick and mortar school, it has become established that there is a summer break. Now with homeschooling, it becomes your choice whether to have a summer break or not. Many homeschoolers view every day as a learning experience – this does not necessarily include curriculum. With the great weather we have been enjoying swimming lessons, hiking, biking and many other warm weather learning opportunities. Our kids read and write every day because they enjoy it. And we take advantage of our non-travel times to do our curriculum program with Progress Academy. We have the flexibility to look at the whole year and plan our studies accordingly. Some people do take a summer break in their homeschooling families. It really just depends on your lifestyle, goals and individual family choices. I talked with a mom the other day who said it’s only July and her daughters getting bored – so she was starting into her curriculum right now. Of course it is perfectly legal to homeschool all year round – even though your particular state may require notifications, assessments, and such on a traditional school schedule. So, enjoy your ability to choose and enjoy your summer however works best for your whole family!

I was in Florida vacationing with my family back in May. We had gone to the grocery store and saw these rubber band like bracelets at the checkout in fun animal shapes. It was an inexpensive treat so we bought some for the kids. Our girls started wearing these brightly colored rubber band bracelets called Silly Bandz. We were standing in line somewhere and the woman in front of us asked the girls about the bracelets – we explained that we had just found them at the grocery store. The woman said she was a school teacher and asked my girls if all the kids at school were wearing these bracelets. My girls said “We are homeschooled, we don’t know if the kids at school are wearing them.” I thought to myself – I’ll bet they won’t allow these fun bracelets at school because they would be a big distraction. And I said to myself – I bet they will ban these bracelets as soon as they can! I was suddenly very glad to live a more carefree life – homeschooling my children, free of the impositions and unnecessary restrictions. We still buy some Silly Bandz once in awhile for fun – my kids aren’t obsessed just enjoying the fun bracelets. We even use the packs to do a little math – dividing up the packs and adding to the collection! It is interesting how the relaxed atmosphere of homeschooling finds learning even in the silliest of things!

Curriculum is a key topic in the homeschool community, and in some circles a big debate. If you are new to homeschooling (comment to this post if you are!), you may not be aware that curriculum was non-existent when homeschooling got its start. Our homeschooling pioneers in the US had to clear their own path in a new territory. There were no resources, no groups and no curriculum. So, naturally they had to create their own educational tools from libraries, bookstores and the few school districts who were willing to share their resources with parents.

Fast forward to today and you will find hundreds of curricula to choose from. It is only natural that the homeschooling pioneers constructed a culture of do-it-yourselfers who wanted to create their own education plans. Today however, many people do not want to be the creator and appreciate ready made curriculum, making their decision to homeschool easier. For instance, if you are coming from a conventional school setting you may want a traditional curriculum because that is what you are used to. Of course a large number of us are somewhere in between, with the mentality that yes, curriculum is good, but it is not the beginning or end to our child’s education. Always keep in mind that you have a choice and you are in charge! Be creative by using more than books and explore your options. Homeschooling is a culture and it is open to all. There is plenty of room for new ideas and new ways of thinking. If it works for you and your family, then it is good!
